General Information for Using the Annenberg Video Programs
as High-Quality Professional Development
The Annenberg Media Video Programs are available in DVD or VHS tape format for Alabama teachers to use as high-quality
professional development. Many local school systems have already requested and received copies of these programs.
The Annenberg Media collection offers programming ranging from 30 minutes to two hours on a broad range of topics. The
Alabama Department of Education has purchased licensing rights to the Annenberg series and can provide either specific
segments or the entire collection to educators at no charge for the programming. The school or school system, however,
must provide the VHS tapes or DVDs for duplication. If these programs are not already available in your local school
system, contact Dr. Ron Wright, Coordinator of the Alabama Learning Resources Center at the Alabama Department of
Education by e-mail (rwright@alsde.edu) or by telephone at 334.242.8071.
To use the Annenberg Media Video Programs as high-quality professional development for demonstrating
“highly qualified teacher” status, you should follow these steps:
-
Review the catalog to locate the name of the core academic subject for which you are certified and seeking “highly qualified teacher” status.
-
Identify a program topic or topics that you want to learn more about; for example, Geometry is a topic under the subject Mathematics.
-
Note the corresponding “Number of Programs” for the topic selected. For example, Geometry has 12 programs.
-
Arrange for access to the DVDs or VHS tapes for the program in which you have chosen to participate. These items may be available through the local school system administrative office from the coordinator of professional development, learning resources, or curriculum and instruction.
-
Discuss procedures for using the Annenberg Media Video Programs with your local school system Professional Development Coordinator, or other designated administrator, so that you understand how to check out, participate in, return, handle follow-up activities, and receive documentation for participation in the video activities. These procedures must be established by the local school system. To be considered as high-quality professional development, however, you must:
-
View all of the programs listed for a topic. For example, viewing all 12 programs for Geometry could be considered as a single high-quality professional development activity.
-
Receive a signed certificate or memorandum indicating participation in the activity. Acceptable documentation must provide:
-
teacher’s name
-
source of the activity – Annenberg Media Video Programs
-
core academic subject, topic, number of programs viewed, and the total clock hours of the activity – Mathematics: Geometry (12 programs) (xxx Hours)
-
date the activity was completed by the teacher
-
authorized signature to verify professional development participation
-
Use documentation of participation in the Annenberg Media Video Programs as you would any other documentation for professional development.
