Teacher Education & Certification FAQs
Are individuals who already hold Alabama Professional Certificates required to pass the Praxis II subject assessments required in the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program?
Individuals who currently hold or have held Alabama Professional Educator Certificates and who are advancing to a higher degree level of certification in the same field are not required to pass the Praxis II subject assessments of the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program. Please note, however, that individuals whose Professional Educator Certificates have lapsed for more than six months must pass the Praxis II subject assessments as part of the requirements for reinstating their certificates. Also note that individuals must meet applicable requirements for the basic skills assessments of the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program.
Holders of Alabama Professional Educator Certificates who are advancing their existing certificates to a higher degree level of certification in the same field are not required to take a Praxis II subject assessment. Example: If the holder of an Alabama Class B (bachelor's degree level) Professional Educator Certificate in Elementary Education attains a Class A (master's degree level) Professional Educator Certificate in Elementary Education, that person would have earned advanced certification in the same field as their lower-level certification and would not be required to take a Praxis II subject assessment.
Holders of Alabama Professional Educator Certificates who are adding a new teaching field or instructional support area are obtaining initial certification in that new field or area and are required to take the appropriate Praxis II subject assessment. Example: If the holder of an Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate in Elementary Education seeks certification in another teaching field or instructional support area, such as mathematics or Library-Media, that person must take the appropriate Praxis II subject assessment.
