WHEREAS, the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school which, with successful performance on the end-of-course AP Exams, potentially qualifies them to receive college credit and/or advanced placement at colleges and universities worldwide; and
 
WHEREAS, the College Board annually grants the academic distinction of AP State Scholar to the top male AP student and the top female AP student in each state and the District of Columbia for grades of 3 or higher on a five-point scale on the greatest number of AP Exams and then the highest average grade – at least 3.5 – on all AP Exams taken; and
 
WHEREAS, in 2005 more than 1 million high school students in more than 15,000 secondary schools took more than 2.1 million AP Exams, and only 102 students nationwide earned the academic distinction of AP State Scholar:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Steven C. Kim, a graduate of Huntsville’s Virgil I. Grissom High School currently enrolled at Princeton University, for earning the distinction of AP State Scholar and for being one of only two Alabama high school students to receive this honor in 2005 in recognition of exemplary college-level achievement on Advanced Placement Program Examinations.
