WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) selected the Selma City Schools Child Nutrition Program, Selma, Alabama, to receive special recognition for outstanding achievement in the development and implementation of a Local Wellness Policy (Healthy School Environment) during the 2006-2007 School Year; and
WHEREAS, the Child Nutrition staff has taken an active role in helping to combat childhood obesity by promoting nutrition, health, and hygiene activity; and
WHEREAS, Selma City Schools, in cooperation with the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and Dr. Brian Geiger involved students, staff, and parents in its implementation; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture presented this award to Selma City Schools on October 20, 2007, at the State Child Nutrition Program Directors’ meeting in Pelham, Alabama:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend and congratulate the Selma City Schools Child Nutrition Managers; Child Nutrition staff; principals; Mrs. Smyly Kirkpatrick, Child Nutrition Director; and Dr. Verdell Lett Dawson, Interim Superintendent, for supporting the Child Nutrition Program in this outstanding accomplishment and for their promotion of a healthy school environment.
