RECOGNIZING THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA'S
MULTIPLE ABILITIES K-6 ELEMENTARY TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM
INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATE OF DISTINCTION
WHEREAS, the International Reading Association is the world's largest organization of literacy professionals and advocates a major national investment in teacher preparation and professional development to ensure that every teacher is competent to teach reading to all students of various ability levels; and
WHEREAS, the International Reading Association awarded one of only five Certificates of Distinction in the nation to The University of Alabama's Multiple Abilities K-6 Elementary Teacher Preparation Program, or MAP; and
WHEREAS, the Certificate of Distinction honors exemplary teacher education programs that prepare individuals for initial licensure or certification as an elementary or secondary classroom teacher, and recognizes only distinguished programs that consistently prepare well-qualified reading teachers; and
WHEREAS, MAP at The University of Alabama reached this distinction in content; faculty and teaching; apprenticeship; field experiences and practica; diversity; candidate program assessment; and government, resources and vision; and
WHEREAS, this award validates The University of Alabama's excellent teacher preparation practices and acknowledges that educators in the state of Alabama are leading this effort; and
WHEREAS, special education faculty at The University of Alabama created MAP - the first Alabama program approved to combine special education and regular education – in the 1990s to prepare teachers for certification in elementary education and what is now called collaborative special education teacher and is strongly supported by the current Dean of Education, Dr. Jim McLean; and
WHEREAS, superintendents across the state and nation are eager to employ MAP graduates:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend MAP; the special education faculty who developed and/or sustain the program today - Dr. Ed Ellis, Dr. Carol Schlichter, and Dr. Madeleine Gregg, Dr. Carol Donovan, and Dr. Jim McLean, Dean of Education, The University of Alabama for receiving the prestigious Certificate of Distinction from the International Reading Association.
