ADOPTED RESOLUTION COMMENDING ASHLEY HALFMAN, MISS ALABAMA 1998
WHEREAS, in 1994 Ashley Halfman established a mentoring program called "Each One Reach One," in which high school students form special relationships with elementary students; and
WHEREAS, in only its second year, "Each One Reach One" was presented as a model program at the National AmeriCorps Conference in Washington, D.C., and was expanded statewide by AmeriCorps volunteers in its third year, reaching more than 600 students; and
WHEREAS, Miss Halfman's goal is to expand "Each One Reach One" to as many schools as possible in Alabama; and
WHEREAS, she is serving as the Alabama PTA’s Honorary Membership Chair and the first chair of the association’s newly created Special Committee on Mentoring; and
WHEREAS, Miss Halfman continues to promote mentoring and education through her role as Miss Alabama 1998 and is herself a mentor to an elementary school child in Birmingham:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education hereby expresses its appreciation to Miss Halfman for her efforts, both in word and deed, to promote learning and self-esteem among our children and youth; commends her for her selection as Miss Alabama 1998; and extends its best wishes for her future endeavors.
