RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF DR. MARY JANE CAYLOR
FOR SUPPORT OF THE ALABAMA MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE,
AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, business and education leaders from across the nation have identified mathematics, science, and technology education as crucial for preparing students to successfully compete in the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education appointed a blue ribbon committee of K-12 educators, higher education representatives, and business leaders to complete an extensive review of research, including a major survey of Alabama teachers, to determine what is needed to provide students with a world-class education in mathematics and science; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative was established based on initial work and ongoing efforts of the Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education Coalition to ensure every student receives challenging, standards-based instruction utilizing the appropriate resources from knowledgeable, well-trained, and well-supported teachers; and
WHEREAS, Alabama teachers will be provided with resources, professional development, and on-site support to strengthen content knowledge and instructional practices in mathematics, science, and technology; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor has supported the efforts of the Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative and continues to be an advocate for improving instruction in Alabama schools; and
WHEREAS, the State Superintendent of Education recommends approval:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That on behalf of Alabama's 735,000 students and 45,000 teachers, the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend, congratulate, and thank Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, State Board of Education Member, District 8, for her dedicated efforts in pursuing funding to officially begin the Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative.
