RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF WILLIAM BYRD, RECIPIENT OF THE TROOPS TO TEACHERS
“EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING” AWARD
WHEREAS, William Byrd received the first-ever Troops to Teachers “Excellence in Teaching” Award in ceremonies at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, on October 16, 2002; and
WHEREAS, First Lady Laura Bush presented the award to William Byrd, a seventh-grade math, science, and reading teacher at Riverton Middle School in the Madison County School System; and
WHEREAS, William Byrd was one of only three teachers in the United States selected for this prestigious award, based on his positive impact on student achievement, his role in making significant school improvements, and his effect as a role model for students; and
WHEREAS, William Byrd, a former Marine and retired Naval officer, exemplifies the best of what Troops to Teachers brings to public education – the military’s commitment to excellence and teamwork – and is a credit to the teaching and military professions:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend William Byrd, Riverton Middle School (Madison County School System), as the recipient of the 2002 Troops to Teachers “Excellence in Teaching” Award; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Mr. Elam Ray Swaim, Superintendent, Madison County School System, and Mr. Richard Medlen, Principal, Riverton Middle School, for recommending William Byrd for the Troops to Teachers “Excellence in Teaching” Award.
