BOARD BRIEFS

June 12, 2008

The Alabama State Board of Education met Thursday, June 12, 2008, in the auditorium of the Gordon Persons Building, Montgomery, Alabama, to consider elementary and secondary education matters.  Members present were:  Mrs. Ella B. Bell, Mrs. Stephanie Bell, Mr. David F. Byers, Jr., Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, Dr. Ethel H. Hall, Mr. Randy McKinney, Mrs. Betty Peters, and Mrs. Sandra Ray. Governor Bob Riley was absent.  Dr. Joseph B. Morton, State Superintendent of Education, was also present.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

The Board adopted and/or approved the following items:

 

§  Resolution Commending George Hall Elementary School, National School Change Award, Mobile County School System

 

§  Resolution Commending Alabama’s 2008 Presidential Scholars

 

§  Resolution Commending State Honoree Diedre Graham, Murphy High School, Mobile County School System, 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

 

§  Resolution in Honor of Hunter Bledsoe, Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, Trussville City Schools, 2008 National Geographic Bee State Winner and 2nd Place Winner of the National Geographic Bee

 

§  Announce Intent to Amend Alabama Administrative Code, Rule 290-8-9-.02, Pertaining to the Evaluations of Children Suspected of Having a Disability; Rule 290-8-9-.03, Pertaining to Disability Definitions, Criteria, and Minimum Required Evaluative Components; and Rule 290-8-9-.12, Pertaining to Intellectually Gifted Children

 

§  Announce Intent to Amend Alabama Administrative Code, Rule 290-3-1-.02, Pertaining to Public School Governance – Specifically the Early College Enrollment Program

 

§  Announce Intent to Repeal and Adopt New Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 290-3-2, Pertaining to Teacher Certification

 

§  Authorize Review of Teacher Education Programs, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama

 

§  Approval of Teacher Education Programs, Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama

 

§  Authorize Review of Teacher Education Programs, The University of North Alabama, Florence, Alabama

 

§  Approval of Teacher Education Programs, Judson College, Marion, Alabama

 

§  Resolution Commending Dr. Anita Buckley Commander for Her Career in Public Education

 

§  Approval of Director, Classroom Improvement

 

§  Resolution on FY 2009 Education Budget

 

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Alabama State Board of Education to consider K-12 matters is Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., in the auditorium of the Gordon Persons Building in Montgomery, Alabama.
