WHEREAS, the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school which, with successful performance on the end-of-course AP Exams, potentially qualifies them to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both at colleges and universities worldwide; and

WHEREAS, the College Board annually grants the academic distinction of AP State Scholar to the one male AP student and the one female AP student in each state and the District of Columbia with grades of 3 or higher on a five-point scale on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average grade – at least 3.5 – on all AP Exams taken; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, more than 1.3 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools took more than 2.3 million AP Exams, and only 106 students nationwide earned the academic distinction of AP State Scholar:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Verena C. Knoedler, a graduate of Indian Springs School, for earning the distinction of AP State Scholar and for being one of only two Alabama high school students to receive this honor in the 16th annual AP State Scholar Awards, which recognize exemplary college-level achievement on Advanced Placement Program Examinations.
