WHEREAS, the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school; and

WHEREAS, successful performance on the end-of-course AP Exams potentially qualifies students to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both at colleges and universities worldwide; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, more than 1.8 million high school students in approximately 18,000 schools took more than 3.2. million AP Exams; and

WHEREAS, the College Board annually grants the academic distinction of State AP Scholar to one male and one female student in each state and the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, State AP Scholars must earn scores of 3 or higher on a five-point scale on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average grade – at least 3.5 – on all AP Exams taken:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Alan S. Chou, of Virgil I. Grissom High School in the Huntsville City School System, for earning the honor of State AP Scholar received in the 20th annual College Board State AP Scholar Awards, which recognize exemplary college-level achievement on Advanced Placement Program Exams.
