COMMENDING SUZANNE B. CULBRETH SPAIN PARK HIGH SCHOOL HOOVER CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM 2012-2013 ALABAMA TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND
SECONDARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR
WHEREAS, Suzanne B. Culbreth, a teacher for 28 years, teaches at Spain Park High School in the Hoover City School System; and
WHEREAS, she is a valuable faculty member and serves as department head, mathematics team coach, and mentor to new teachers; and
WHEREAS, she is described as an exemplary educator and a model teacher who demonstrates the benefits of hands-on discovery learning and gains the attention of her students through a well-designed, enriched curriculum; and
WHEREAS, she is available to her students before and after school, holds study sessions the day before and the morning of any test, and even logs on to a geoBlog Website in the evenings before tests to answer her students’ questions as they study at home; and
WHEREAS, she does not want her students to merely memorize formulas and work problems but wants them to leave her tutelage with an understanding of the complexities of math that will stay with them; and
WHEREAS, as a lifelong learner, Suzanne B. Culbreth attends and leads professional organizations’ conferences as well as numerous institutes and training sessions; and
WHEREAS, her professional associations include the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Alabama Network of National Board Certified Teachers, Alabama Milken Network, and the National Science Teachers Association; and
WHEREAS, she is the recipient of numerous awards and has served as a presenter for several conferences, including Alabama Educational Technology Conference for Grades K-12 Teachers, and Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Suzanne B. Culbreth for her dedication to children and youth, her commitment to excellence, and the recognition she has brought to the teaching profession for the benefit of students and teachers in the state.
