ADOPTED RESOLUTION ENDORSING
ALABAMA SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK
WHEREAS, nearly 400,000 children in Alabama's public elementary and secondary classrooms get to school every day by riding one of 6,748 yellow school buses; and
WHEREAS, those buses annually travel a total of nearly 67 million miles; and
WHEREAS, the National Safety Council cites school buses as being 172 times safer than transportation via a passenger automobile, eight times safer than passenger trains or scheduled airlines, and four times safer than transit or inter-city buses; and
WHEREAS, student safety is the primary concern of parents, bus drivers and school officials:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the State Board of Education hereby endorses School Bus Safety Week, October 18-24, 1998, and urges all Alabama motorists to learn and obey the rules of school bus safety every day.
