ADOPTED RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF 1999 STATEWIDE PARENTING DAY
WHEREAS, the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Education strongly support parental/family involvement in the education of all students; and
WHEREAS, research from the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs, National PTA, indicates that the most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which that student’s family is able to (1) create a home environment that encourages learning; (2) communicate high, yet reasonable, expectations for their child’s achievement and future careers; and (3) become involved in their child’s education and school and in their community; and
WHEREAS, students whose parents are actively involved in their education reach higher levels of achievement, earn higher grades and test scores, have better attendance in school, have higher graduation rates and greater enrollment rates in postsecondary education; and
WHEREAS, the concept of a statewide parenting day for all public schools in Alabama on October 11, 1999 (Columbus Day) to be used for parent/teacher conferences and inservice sessions on issues important to parents and teachers such as graduation requirements, reading skills, attendance, Academics First, safety and discipline, and other important issues is one supported by the State Board of Education and State Superintendent, 49 of 53 local superintendents who responded to an October 1998 survey, with additional endorsements from the Alabama PTA, the Alabama Association of School Boards, the Alabama Education Association, and the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools; and
WHEREAS, a statewide parenting day is not a mandate from the State Board of Education to local boards of education and there are no financial costs to a local system associated with participation; and
WHEREAS, the State Superintendent of Education recommends approval:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education and the State Superintendent do hereby endorse the establishment of an annual statewide parenting day on October 11, 1999 (Columbus Day), and encourage local boards of education and superintendents to incorporate the day into the 1999-2000 school calendar for their respective districts.
