WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education appreciates each contribution each citizen of Alabama makes to the betterment of public education; and
 
WHEREAS, one native daughter, Mignon C. Smith (daughter of J. Craig and Page T. Smith), has chosen to honor her Mother and Father as well as the entire state of Alabama by establishing a scholarship foundation entitled The J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship Foundation; and
 
WHEREAS, the scholarship foundation will award 10 scholarships to seniors from the Class of 2005 from various high schools across Alabama with the scholarships providing full tuition, room and board, and books; and
 
WHEREAS, the scholarship foundation will seek applications from students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service and will award some of the scholarships to “first in the family” to attend college; and
 
WHEREAS, at its full maturity The J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship Foundation will have an endowment in excess of $30 million and award scholarships to approximately 100 seniors per year:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Education do hereby proclaim their gratitude and thanks to Mignon C. Smith for her generosity, her benevolence, and her vision as it pertains to enabling students graduating from Alabama’s public high schools to have the opportunity to apply for a J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship.
