Dr. Eddie R. Johnson Biography
Deputy State Superintendent of Education
Prior to being named deputy state superintendent of education, Dr. Johnson worked in the department as an assistant state superintendent, director, education administrator, and education specialist. Previously, he worked in higher education serving as academic dean, associate dean, and associate professor in education. He also has public school teaching experience. He earned his Ph.D. and master's degrees in educational administration from The University of Alabama and his bachelor's degree in social sciences from Stillman College.
Dr. Johnson serves on the Board of Trustees at Stillman College. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Capstone Society at The University of Alabama and serves on dissertation committees for doctoral students at Alabama State University and The University of Alabama. He has served on several national boards including the Board of Examiners (BOE) for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Ford Foundation Minority Teachers Advisory Board, and the Dewitt-Wallace Minority Teachers Advisory Board.
Dr. Johnson serves on numerous Boards including United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Department of Youth Services, YMCA Metro, Partners in Education, Big Brothers Big Sisters, American Red Cross, 100 Black Men of America, Inter-Alumni Council (UNCF), and Alabama State University Foundation. He is a member of Leadership Alabama Class XII and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Phi Boulè).
Dr. Johnson's awards and honors include induction into the Educators' Hall of Fame at Stillman College, the Alabama Adult Education Contributor of the Year Award given by the Alabama Association for Public Continuing Adult Education, the Martin Luther King Legacy Award in Education given by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the "S" Award (Stillman College's highest award for an alumnus) given by the Stillman College National Alumni Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award given by the Stillman College National Alumni Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award given by the UNCF National Alumni Council, and the Alumnus of the Year Award given by S. D. Bishop State Community College.
