The Alabama State Department of Education's Special Education Services was awarded a five year State Improvement Grant (SIG) by the Office of Special Education and address the needs of students with disabilities in Alabama. The needs addressed in Alabama's SIG can be summarized as poor academic performance, high dropout rate, high suspension and expulsion rate, and inadequate numbers of teaching and service personnel to fill some critical positions.

The grant seeks to improve outcomes, build capacity and affect systems change for students with disabilities through training for teachers, administrators, parents, paraeducators and service providers. Provided training will:

  • Improve Reading Skills
  • Increase Student Engagement
  • Improve Student Behavior and Reduce Discipline Problems
  • Enhance Recruitment, Retention, and Ongoing Professional Development for Teachers and Support Personnel
Please refer to the calendar for information about upcoming SIG workshops.
