Board of Education Resolutions

Resolution:
 
WHEREAS, on December 4, 2002, Thomas Shelton, a student at Oxford Middle School in the Oxford City School System, was a passenger on School Bus 99-9 and recognized a dangerous situation when the bus driver suffered a massive stroke, slumped over, and the school bus began veering off
 
WHEREAS, 13-year-old Thomas Shelton acted quickly, grabbed the steering wheel, slammed on the brakes, regained control of the school bus, and stopped it from crashing into a house, which not only saved the lives of everyone involved but also prevented extensive property damage; and
 
WHEREAS, by remaining calm and keeping his wits about him, Thomas Shelton, a mature young man with a history of helping others, saved a house, the school bus, and the lives of the bus driver and all the schoolchildren on the bus:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Thomas Shelton, a student at Oxford Middle School in the Oxford City School System, for his quick thinking and heroic actions on December 4, 2002, that saved the lives of his fellow students and the bus driver on School Bus 99-9.
