The purpose of the Milken Family Foundation is to discover and advance
inventive and effective ways of helping people help themselves and those around
them lead productive and satisfying lives. The Foundation advances this mission
primarily through its work in education and medical research. Outstanding educators who continue to learn are
essential to the fostering of student growth, the improvement of schools, and the enhancement of the education
profession. The goals of the Milken Educator Awards are:
- Honoring and rewarding outstanding K-12 educators for the quality of their teaching,
their professional leadership, their engagement with families and the community, and their
potential for even greater contribution to the healthy development of children.
- Focusing public attention on the importance of excellent educators.
- Encouraging able, caring, and creative people to choose the challenge, service, and adventure of teaching as a career.
- Creating national and state networks of Milken Educators.
- Engaging corporate and foundation partners in assisting Milken Educators and in support of policies that advance education.

The Milken Family Foundation annually awards $25,000 each to outstanding educators throughout the United States. Elementary and
secondary educators are honored in alternate years. Recommendations for Alabama's Milken Educators are solicited each spring from
educators, parents, business and community leaders, legislators, and previous Milken Educator Award recipients. From these
recommendations, the Foundation selects two Milken Educators from Alabama and announces these winners in the fall. The following
year, at the Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference, Lowell and Michael Milken present a $25,000
check to each Milken Educator during a gala awards celebration. Since 1998, Alabama's honorees have become part of a growing national network of
distinguished educators, as well as the Alabama Milken Educator Network. As valuable human resources for public
education, these veteran Milken Educators may be called upon to conduct workshops, review grants, write articles
addressing education issues, serve on committees and task forces, speak to civic and professional organizations, and identify other
exemplary educators. For a list of Alabama's Milken Educators, 1998-2009, click here.
