Dr. Tommy Bice was appointed Alabama’s State Superintendent of Education on November 10, 2011, and assumed the position on January 1, 2012.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bice was Alabama’s Deputy State Superintendent of Education for Instructional Services; Superintendent of the Alexander City School System, high school principal, career tech director, alternative school teacher/director, special education/residential school director, early childhood teacher/parent trainer; and began his career as a teacher at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. Dr. Bice also serves as an adjunct professor of Educational Leadership at Auburn University.

Dr. Bice received his B.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Auburn University and his M.S. degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Julie Hannah is the Director of the Office of Student Learning for the Alabama State Department of Education. She has a long history of service to the Jefferson County School System as a teacher, principal, and district administrator.

She served as Director of Professional Learning and most recently as Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. As an adjunct professor for Samford University, she trained aspiring principals and teacher leaders.

Dr. Hannah is committed to public education and is available to talk about programs and initiatives that exist to support districts and schools in improving learning opportunities for all students.

Currently as Assistant State Superintendent, Dr. Maddox has leadership responsibility which encompasses Information Systems, Research & Development, and Education Information & Accountability. Prior to being named Assistant State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Maddox was the Director of Technology Initiatives.
Dr. Maddox earned her Ed.D. degree from Auburn University, her master’s degree from the University of Montevallo, and her bachelor’s degree from Troy University. She has served two terms at the national level on the Board of Directors for SETDA (State Technology Directors Association) and past treasurer.
She was recognized by SETDA as the National Educational Technology Leader of the Year (2006). She received a Commendation from Governor Riley and the Alabama State Board of Education passed a resolution recognizing her for receiving this prestigious national award and her leadership in Alabama in Educational Technology and ACCESS Distance Learning.

Erica S. Pippins joined the Alabama State Department of Education Communications Unit in February 2013.

Prior to coming to the ALSDE, Erica worked at the Montgomery Advertiser, where she served in many roles, including Education Reporter, Assistant Metro Editor and Lifestyles Editor. She was also a Senior Reporter/Assistant City Editor at The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.

Erica received her Bachelor's in Journalism from Langston University and earned her Master's in Communications from Murray State University.

As Director of Communications for the Alabama State Department of Education, Dr. Michael Sibley leads the team responsible for communicating education policies, programs and events with state and national news media, as well as internal and external publics and other education advocacy groups.

Prior to joining the ALSDE, Dr. Sibley served as Director of Publications in Tuskegee University’s Public Relations and Marketing department. Before accepting the position at Tuskegee University, he worked as Director of Communication for Guilford Capital Corporation – an investment banking firm in Montgomery, AL.

Dr. Sibley earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Public Relations from Troy University; a Master’s degree in Management from Troy University Montgomery; and a Doctorate in Education Leadership, Policy, and Law from Alabama State University.

He is experienced and well versed in the topics of public information, copy writing, editing, marketing campaign planning and many associated areas.

Dr. Tony Thacker is the Coordinator of Research and Development at the Alabama State Department of Education. Prior to his current position, Dr. Thacker coordinated the Governor’s Commission on Quality Teaching.

Dr. Thacker is a former science teacher, principal, At-Risk Coordinator, Title IV Coordinator, and national trainer for the University of Alabama’s Integrated Science program. He has been a middle school Teacher of the Year and a consultant for the Southern Regional Education Board. He is a co-author of three books entitled “From At-Risk to Academic Excellence"; "What Successful Leaders Do,” “Creating School Cultures That Embrace Learning” and “Schools Where Teachers Lead.”

Dr. Thacker is available to speak on a range of subjects including leading school change, data driven school improvement, organizing resources to optimize achievement, and driving school improvement by revitalizing the school mission, vision and goals.

Malissa began work at Alabama State Department of Education in January 2009. Prior to the position, she worked as a Multi Media Specialist at Auburn University (2006-2009) and WSFA 12 News as a Promotion Producer (2003-2006).

She graduated from Auburn University in 2003 with a Bachelor’s in Mass Communication, and is APR (Accreditation in Public Relations) Certified.

Malissa is experienced and well versed in the topics of public information, copy writing, editing, marketing campaign planning, video production, social media and many associated areas.

Alabama State Department of Education Coordinator of Accountability Shanthia Washington has more than 20 years of experience in public education, where she has served in a variety of positions ranging from teacher to central office administrator.

At the central office, she has worked as a curriculum, federal programs and accountability director.

 In her current capacity, Mrs. Washington’s main areas of focus include development and implementation of the accountability program and the Alabama Plan 2020 ESEA Flexibility Plan.

Mrs. Washington is well versed on topics such as Accountability, Plan 2020, and the Alabama Plan 2020 ESEA Flexibility Plan.
