Parents and educators may have different opinions about specific terms like dyslexia or more general terms like learning disabilities. Understanding these terms and agreeing on which to use can help prevent confusion and conflict. It can also lead to a shared understanding of a child’s needs.

Five publications have been developed for school administrators, educators, educational interpreters, students, and parents to support language access for deaf and hard of hearing children in general education settings. The publications were developed in collaboration with Dr. Brenda Schick and  Boys Town National Research Hospital and are based on the content of Dr. Schick's Classroom Interpreting website maintained by Boys Town National Research Hospital. Many Special Education teachers and school librarians in Alabama may not be aware of the Captioned Media Program offered by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the National Association of the Deaf.
