COMMENDING DR. GLORIA A. TURNER, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ASSESSMENT,
UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT
FROM THE ALABAMA STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner, Director of Student Assessment, Office of Student Learning, has announced her intent to retire from the Alabama State Department of Education effective on December 31, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner graduated with honors from Jacksonville State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with a major in Mathematics; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling, obtained AA Certification in Guidance and Counseling, and earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Research from The University of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner joined the Alabama State Department of Education in 1990 as an Education Specialist for the state testing program; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner has worked in the central office administration in both the Tuscaloosa County School System and the Hale County School System planning and implementing state and local testing programs for the public schools, as an Education Specialist for the Alabama State Department of Education providing services in the area of counseling and career guidance for the local school systems in the state, as a high school mathematics teacher in the Calhoun County School System and the Tuscaloosa County School System, and as an Administrative Assistant/Counselor at The University of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner has been instrumental in providing leadership for planning, designing, and implementing state assessment programs for the public schools in Alabama, coordinating the administration of norm-referenced assessments as well as coordinating both the development and administration of criterion-referenced assessments in Grades K-12 and providing technical assistance to the local school systems in the state; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner has been a member of the Executive Council of the Alabama ACT State Organization, the Council of Chief State School Officers’ Peer Review Committee, the Alabama Association for Counseling and Development, the Alabama Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors where she served as President and received the Outstanding Member Award, the Alabama Association for School Counselors, the American Educational Research Association and the Mid-South Educational Research Association where she served as a Board of Director; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner is described by her coworkers as a dynamic individual who serves as an inspiration to all who know her because she genuinely cares about others; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gloria A. Turner, while exhibiting intelligence, integrity, work ethic, and professionalism in everything she does, is truly characterized by her compassion, grace, poise, and southern charm, thereby making her a true and genuine leader; and
WHEREAS, the State Superintendent of Education recommends approval:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Dr. Gloria A. Turner for her years of service to the students in Alabama’s public schools and does hereby wish her a very happy, healthy, and long retirement.
