The mission of Alabama Green Ribbon Schools (AL-GRS) is to inspire schools, districts, and institutions of higher education to nurture and promote 21st century excellence in teaching and in practice. This includes demonstrating responsible stewardship of Alabama's natural resources, promoting the safety and wellness of children and adults, and encouraging an appreciation of Alabama's rich natural heritage.
AL-GRS mirrors the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) in recognizing schools, districts, and IHE that show exemplary dedication to the following three pillars:
1. Reducing environmental impact and costs
2. Improving the health and wellness of their schools, students, and staff
3. Providing effective environmental and sustainability education.
We encourage schools, districts, and institutions of higher education making creative efforts that go above and beyond expectations and requirements in these three pillars to apply to become an Alabama Green Ribbon School. AL-GRS will award up to 5 PK-12 schools and districts and a single IHE each year. All Alabama Green Ribbon Schools are nominated to ED-GRS by our state nominating authority.
Alabama Green Ribbon Schools are recognized by the State Board of Education with Resolutions and celebrated with a picnic each spring.
