On February 9, 2017, the Alabama State Board of Education (ALSDE) voted unanimously to intervene into Montgomery Public Schools (MPS).  Although additional resources and supports are being provided to lower performing schools within the district, State Superintendent Michael Sentance's intervening authority covers the entire district. The ALSDE is relentlessly focused on improving organizational culture, operations, and efficiency at all levels which we believe will ultimately translate into significant increases in student achievement and other important outcomes.

Dr. Barbara Cooper has been named Chief Administrative Officer of MPS and Dr. Reginald Eggleston has been named Chief Education Officer (CEO) to oversee the daily operations of MPS. Additionally, the ALSDE has created a Department of School Improvement and Turnaround under the direction of Dr. Jermall Wright to create systemic supports and state oversight of the MPS Intervention. This intervention will take place in five phases between 2017 and 2022.

Although Phase I of the five year Strategic Plan (MPS Plan 2022) has been created, Phases II-V of the plan will be created by a diverse group of stakeholders beginning in the fall of 2017. Additionally, we strongly believe in the engagement and participation of the local school community in the school improvement process.  Please contact the MPS Family and Community Engagement Office at to find out how you can play a role in the transformation of MPS.

Thank you for continued support of the work of improving Montgomery Public Schools.
