Thank you for your service to our country!  We are excited that you have a desire to teach the students of Alabama! 
 
Listed below are some options for gaining Alabama certification. Other certification options are available on our Web page at www.alsde.edu/edcert
 
As a courtesy, active duty military personnel and their spouses receive an expedited application review.  Please note that all certification requirements in place at the time of application must be met.

​Alabama offers several options to certify individuals in health science and the various program areas of technical education.  The initial certificate is available at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system.

​Alabama professional educator certification is offered on the basis of valid professional educator certificates issued by other states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, or the Department of Defense Education Activity if the professional educator certificate issued by them is in an area, at a grade level, and at a degree level in which Alabama offers comparable professional certification. A professional educator certificate must be held as Alabama certification is not offered solely on the basis of educator preparation programs completed at non-Alabama institutions. ​Alabama offers an Emergency Certificate which is valid for up to one scholastic year and issued at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school.  For more information, click here.

Alabama offers a Higher Education Transitional Certificate (HTEC) for certain P-12, 6-12, and 4-8 teaching fields for an individual who has experience teaching at a regionally accredited college or university. The individual must submit also submit a Letter of Eligibility for the HETC in a teaching field.  This certification is available at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system, to teach in the teaching field indicated on the valid Letter of Eligibility. ​Alabama offers certification to facilitate employment while an individual completes a master's degree level State-approved educator preparation program at an Alabama college or university. This certification is available at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school. ​Alabama offers a JROTC certificate at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school. The individual must provide verification to the employing school system or nonpublic/private school that he/she has been recommended and approved by a branch of the United States military to serve in this capacity.  For more information, click here.

​This alternative approach leads to Alabama bachelor's degree level professional educator certification. Alabama offers alternative certification only at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school. These certificates may be requested in a specific career and technical teaching field in grades 6-12 for an individual who has met degree, coursework, testing, training, and experiential requirements.  For more information, click here.

Alabama offers alternative certification only at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school. Alabama offers a Substitute License at the request of the employing superintendent of an Alabama local school system or the administrator of an eligible nonpublic/private school.  The individual must have earned a high school diploma or state-issued high school equivalency diploma.

This alternative approach leads to Alabama bachelor's degree level professional educator certification. Individuals who have met eligibility and admission requirements for Alabama's pilot Teachers of Tomorrow approach may be employed with an Alabama school system on a Conditional Certificate in a Teaching Field (CCTF).  The CCTF is available for certain P-12, 6-12, and 4-8 teaching fields. This alternative approach leads to Alabama bachelor's level professional educator certification.
