A: The purpose of the team is to make data-based recommendations regarding a student’s academic and behavioral needs. The problem-solving team can be configured by grade-level, department, or any configuration that works best for your school and there can be as many teams as needed. More importantly, there should be experts on the team relative to the grade-level or subject area being discussed. For instance, very little problem-solving or decision-making can occur relative to dyslexia or other reading difficulties if there are no reading experts on the team. Please make sure the appropriate people are involved in the problem-solving process. Focus on the decisions that you anticipate and make sure to bring those experts to the table.

A: Screening and progress monitoring are not new practices, but what may be new to some is the focus on screening for characteristics of dyslexia. These screenings are not intended to diagnose dyslexia; however, the characteristics of dyslexia are some of the same as all struggling readers, e.g., phonemic decoding efficiency, sight word reading efficiency, and accuracy of word reading in on-grade-level text. The screenings will equip schools to identify students who may benefit from dyslexia-specific interventions and services.

No. Physical education must be taught for a minimum of 30 minutes daily.  However, health may be taught on alternate days in Grades K-6 because there is no specified time requirement, only suggested times.  If these two subjects are taught during the same class period, at least 30 minutes must be allocated for physical education, and only certified physical education teachers or certified health teachers may be used to teach the respective subjects. However, teachers who hold dual certification in physical education and health may teach both subjects.
