IN RECOGNITION OF JENNIFER OLEWNIK, GRAND BAY MIDDLE SCHOOL, MOBILE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM, 2013 MILKEN FAMILY FOUNDATION NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARD RECIPIENT
WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education supports efforts to reward Alabama’s outstanding educators for their contributions to the educational experiences of Alabama’s students; and
WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation and the Alabama State Department of Education provide Alabama teachers the opportunity to participate in the National Educator Awards; and
WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards were first presented in 1987 to acknowledge educators’ crucial contributions to our national well-being and to provide public recognition and financial rewards to talented elementary and secondary educators; and
WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation’s 27th annual National Notifications Tour honored more than 50 top educators and is the nation’s largest teacher recognition program; and
WHEREAS, in 2013 Jennifer Olewnik is the only educator in Alabama selected to receive this prestigious award in honor of her efforts on behalf of the nation’s schoolchildren; and
WHEREAS, Jennifer Olewnik is a reading and reading intervention teacher who has helped countless sixth- through eighth-graders improve their reading skills and literacy comprehension; and
WHEREAS, many at-risk students have been placed in her classroom because she tailors lessons based on the students’ abilities. By scaffolding reading instruction in class, she has helped students achieve higher scores on testing; and
WHEREAS, Jennifer Olewnik is described by her peers as a dedicated professional educator who offers students the best of what quality instruction can give, and as an educator who has created a true reading-friendly campus environment at Grand Bay Middle School:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Mrs. Jennifer Olewnik for achieving this prestigious honor and becoming Alabama’s 29th National Milken Educator.
