IN APPRECIATION OF ALABAMA STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EMPLOYEES
WHEREAS, state employees are public servants and State Employee Recognition Day was initiated in 2001 by the National Association of State Personnel Executives, the Governor of South Carolina, and the National Governors Association to recognize the important contributions of state employees and to enhance the image of state public service; and
WHEREAS, the 2014 State Employees Recognition Week in Alabama was hosted May 5-9 by the Employee of the Quarter Board and the Communications Section and the State Department of Education theme for 2014 is The Real World ALSDE, with celebrations, using no state funds, to include interactive, fun, and enriching activities that benefit all employees; and
WHEREAS, during that week the Alabama State Department of Education hosted Employee Recognition Day on May 9, 2014, in order to recognize the professional and civic accomplishments of its employees; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately two million state government employees nationwide and more than 32,000 Alabama state employees, including over 800 State Department of Education employees in Montgomery and Disability Determination Services employees in Birmingham and Mobile; and
WHEREAS, Alabama state employees make significant contributions to the well-being and quality of life for all of our state’s citizens; and
WHEREAS, Alabama State Department of Education employees have generously donated money in 2013 and 2014 to worthy causes that benefit others as represented by $51,768.00 raised for the Alabama State Employees Combined Charitable Campaign, achieving 203.24% of the Department’s goal, and $600.00 donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, benefiting the 5th Annual River Region Walk; and
WHEREAS, Alabama State Department of Education employees strive daily to further the goals of K-12 public education in Alabama and to use state resources wisely during these challenging budget times; and
WHEREAS, Alabama State Department of Education employees support and train our teachers; design curriculum and review textbooks; devise and approve budgets and strategic plans; research and disseminate critical statistics and information; develop and maximize technology; monitor state and federal legislation; promote public education and policy; and collaborate with public and private stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, and elected officials; and
WHEREAS, Alabama State Department of Education employees thrive in a climate of positive encouragement, and recognition events contribute to higher employee morale, increase organizational productivity, and help in recruitment and retention of quality employees; and
WHEREAS, Alabama State Department of Education Employee Recognition Day is a time to appreciate the daily dedication of department employees and to spotlight their professional successes and civic responsibility; and
WHEREAS, the State Superintendent of Education recommends approval:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby endorse May 5-9, 2014, as State Department of Education Employee Recognition Week and does hereby express its appreciation for the dedication and talents of department employees and for their contributions in the workplace and to the state of Alabama.
