COMMENDING THE 2014-2015 ALABAMA TEACHER OF THE YEAR ANN MARIE CORGILL, CHEROKEE BEND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MOUNTAIN BROOK CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill originally set out to design and build homes, but she opted instead to create and construct firm foundations for students to stand on as they learn, grow, and become successful contributing members of society; and
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill, a fourth-grade teacher at Cherokee Bend Elementary School since 2012, strives to reach students by learning about them, honoring their passions, and helping them overcome obstacles so that they can achieve their goals, both as learners and people; and
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill believes that by seamlessly integrating social and emotional learning into current academic standards, educators can teach children self-management skills, responsible decision-making, and ethical problem-solving; and
WHEREAS, outside of the classroom, Ann Marie Corgill uses her talents to serve the community through organizations such as Alabama Girls’ State and by mentoring education majors at Birmingham Southern College; and
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama and is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT); and
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill has been a guest presenter/facilitator at many local and state education conferences and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and currently holds a position on the Council’s Elementary Section Steering Committee; and
WHEREAS, Ann Marie Corgill personifies the time, attention, and patience that great educators show every day in the classroom:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education congratulates Ann Marie Corgill for being named the 2014-2015 Alabama Teacher of the Year and expresses its gratitude to Ann Marie Corgill for her dedication to education, her commitment to learning, and the inspiration that her career has brought to the teaching profession for the benefit of students and teachers in the state.
